Interior & Exterior Features Comparison

As standard, the Dodge Durango's interior gets a 7-inch customizable in-cluster display, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, cloth seats, tri-zone climate control, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. This SUV has seating for seven passengers, and leather-faced seats with perforated suede inserts become available a trim up from the base. You will find Nappa leather seats, heated second-row seats, ventilation for the first row, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, and loads of other premium features on the higher trims. As for the exterior features, you will find 18-inch aluminum wheels as standard, while the rest of the lineup gets 20-inch aluminum wheels in various styles and finishes. Other exterior highlights include a performance hood, dual exhaust tips, LED lighting, and a power liftgate.

The Explorer's interior offerings feature a 6.5-inch LCD in-cluster display, tri-zone climate control, FordPass Connect, rearview camera, cloth seats, and a rotary gear shift dial. Upgrading a trim up from the base switches the cloth seats for ActiveX seating material, although leather seating surfaces become standard from the Limited trim and up. Like the Dodge Durango, the Explorer base trim rides on 18-inch aluminum wheels, and higher trims have various styles and finishes for their 20-inch and 21-inch aluminum wheels. Lastly, exterior highlights consist of automatic LED headlamps, quad chrome exhaust tips, a power liftgate, LED lighting, and rain-sensing wipers.

Engine Options & Performance Comparison

The Durango gets four engine options for 2021, with the standard powertrain being a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine producing 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Upgrading to the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 brings even more performance with 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. With the SRT 392 trim, you will find a 6.4-litre V8 HEMI that delivers 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. For maximum performance, the SRT Hellcat trim has a supercharged 6.2-litre HEMI V8 engine that offers 710 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque.

There are three engine options for the 2021 Explorer, featuring a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine as standard, with an output of 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. A 3.0-litre EcoBoost turbocharged V6 powers both the Platinum and ST trims. The Platinum trim has 365 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque, while the ST trim has increased performance, achieving 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. Lastly, a hybrid 3.3-litre is optional, featuring a combined horsepower output of 318 and 322 lb-ft of torque. Both vehicles have impressive powertrain options, although the Durango has the option for multiple V8 engines, gaining it an edge in the performance category over the Explorer.
